Are Fewer People Getting Divorced in the Canary Islands?

The latest figures published by the General Council of the Judiciary show that divorce and legal separation petitions in Spain fell by 14.1% during the first quarter of 2026.

In the Canary Islands, there were 41.7 divorce and legal separation petitions per 100,000 inhabitants, slightly below the national average of 42.4. The highest rates were recorded in Navarre, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, while Castile and León, the Basque Country and La Rioja registered the lowest figures.

Although the number of divorces in the Canary Islands has fallen slightly, every case involves families facing important decisions. Child arrangements, child maintenance, the family home and the division of assets are all matters that require clear information, careful consideration and expert legal advice.

In our experience, the important question is not whether there are more or fewer divorces, but whether people understand their legal rights and are able to make informed decisions from the very beginning. Receiving legal advice at an early stage can help avoid unnecessary disputes and make it easier to reach practical agreements, allowing everyone involved to move forward with greater confidence.
